Position Title:

Director, Appalachian Wine Initiative

Appalachian State University (ASU) seeks applications for a full-time, twelve-month, faculty position in Viticulture and Enology (VandE) to begin in July, 2009. The appointment is renewable subject to satisfactory performance evaluations. The successful candidate will interact closely with the new Environmental Science Program, Appalachian’s Research Institute for Energy, Environment, and Economics, and will report directly to the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at ASU. Appalachian State University is one of the fastest growing schools in the 16-school University of North Carolina system. With an enrollment of more than 16,000 students and located in Boone, North Carolina, the University sits in the scenic Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina and is an hour away from the Yadkin Valley wineries in North Carolina’s first dedicated viticulture area. With access to local ski resorts and other numerous outdoor activities, Boone is one of the premier tourism and outdoor recreation destinations in the southeastern U.S.

Applicants for the VandE position should have a M.S. or Ph.D. in Enology, Viticulture, or a relevant area of agricultural science with actual winemaking and field research experience preferred. ASU’s academic VandE degree is pending approval and the successful applicant will be expected to contribute strongly to the design and implementation of that curriculum at the University. This position will initially be considered as non-tenure track, although the potential for a tenure-track appointment exists for highly qualified candidates who possess the Ph.D. The successful applicant should have research interests in the area of “Steep-Slope” Viticulture and will have flexibility in proposing new education and outreach programs to help ASU become a wine-education destination for students and the public interested in the wine industry and mountain viticulture. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in environmental aspects of mountain wine growing, including sustainable production, soil erosion control, and agrochemical mitigation. ASU is also home of the Appalachian Center for Mountain Winegrowing that helps develop and support the growth of high-altitude vineyards and wineries in the Blue Ridge Mountains of the Appalachian range. This Center is expected to help develop a new cooperative test winery that will be designed to address sustainable production, research, and education objectives important to the mountain wine community. The successful applicant will also oversee the WISELAB program at ASU. WISELAB, a mobile wine and grape analysis laboratory owned by the University, travels to vineyards and wineries around the state to provide just-in-time service.

The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures at Appalachian State University invites applications for the position of Department Chair beginning July 1, 2010.

The successful candidate will hold the rank of Full or Associate Professor, and must have at least three years experience as chair of a comparable foreign language department. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in one of the specialties of the Department, and have native or near-native proficiency in the target language and in English. Substantial experience working with units outside the department, and a record of success in implementing a vision of the importance of foreign language learning preferred. Within the department, the ideal candidate will be an excellent teacher/scholar committed to forging productive relationships with faculty and students from diverse languages and cultures. The position requires effective interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills, and a commitment to impartiality, openness, and collaboration. Success with external funding preferred. Chairs customarily teach one course per semester and maintain an active program of scholarly research.

The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures has 16 full-time faculty and 14 adjunct instructors. The department houses 9 languages and offers an M.A., 4 undergraduate majors, and 5 undergraduate minors. The department has approximately 16 graduate students, 60 majors and over 100 minors.

The Department of Geography and Planning, which is in the College of Arts and Sciences, has 15 faculty members and offers BA, BS and MA degrees in Geography and a BS in Community and Regional Planning. We offer concentrations in Geographic Information Science at the Bachelor’s and Master’s levels and a concentration in Planning at the Master’s level. The Master’s concentration in Planning is offered both on the ASU campus and on the campus of UNC-Asheville. Assitant/Associate Professor Apparel and Textiles

A one-year faculty position in apparel and textiles design is available August 2009. Responsibilities include: teaching undergraduate courses in apparel design and production, fashion illustration, apparel history and social / psychological aspects of apparel; advising students; assisting in program development; facilitating co-curricular experiences; working with industry advisory council, and engaging in department activities.

Required: Master’s in apparel and textiles or degree in a related area; competence in industry software for computer aided design and illustration; relevant industry experience; relevant professional experience; demonstrated scholarly or creative competence; and relevant professional memberships. Preferred: Doctorate in apparel and textiles or terminal degree in a related area; successful teaching experience and at least one degree in the FCS discipline. Salary and rank will be commensurate with qualifications.

The Family and Consumer Sciences Department has 14 full-time faculty and approximately 300 undergraduate and graduate students. The Department of Family and Consumer Sciences is accredited by the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (AAFCS). Assistant or Associate Professor (University Archivist)

The University Library at Appalachian State University invites applications from innovative and proactive individuals for the position of University Archivist and Director of Records Management. Reporting directly to the University Librarian, the position directs the operations of the University Archives and the University Records Center, which form the official repositories for the records of Appalachian State University.

Responsibilities:
The University Archivist is responsible for the overall arrangement, description, preservation, and reference of records documenting the University’s history, organization, policies, and activities. The position initiates collection development to acquire and preserve records of enduring historical value produced by University offices, faculty, students, and alumni; oversees the arrangement and description of records and makes them accessible according to established archival standards; participates in the Library’s instruction program and contributes to outreach efforts to promote the University Archives; seeks external funding to support new initiatives; coordinates the archiving of appropriate University records in the University's new institutional repository and contributes to the institutional repository’s overall development; teaches a graduate-level course related to archival administration in the Department of History’s Public History program each academic year; and engages in an active program of scholarship and professional service as outlined in the University’s Faculty Handbook and the Library’s Departmental Personnel Committee Guidelines.

In Records Management, the position is responsible for the overall maintenance, retention, retrieval, protection, and preservation of University records from creation to final disposition. The position provides leadership and outreach to campus by identifying, describing, and establishing retention periods for all University records; provides information to offices/departments about transfer procedures and records management best practices; promotes awareness and usage of the 2007 UNC System General Schedule (http://its.uncg.edu/Records_Management/UNCGenSch14062007.pdf); oversees the function of the University Records Center and supervises its personnel, and identifies records of lasting historical or administrative value for inclusion in the University Archives.

Qualifications:

• M.A. in archival administration, public history, or related field; or ALA-accredited master’s degree

• At least five years of experience in archival administration or records management, preferably in higher education
• Familiarity with archival and records management best practices as well as current legislation, laws, and policy which affect university records
• Familiarity with Encoded Archival Description (EAD)

The University Library at Appalachian State University seeks a creative and energetic Information Literacy Librarian to join us in a team-oriented teaching library. This position is part of the Learning and Research Services team which provides library instruction and reference assistance at three public service desks. The successful candidate will work with the Lead Information Literacy Librarian and other library colleagues to create and participate in a comprehensive information literacy program that includes web-based instruction, workshops, classroom instruction and individual assistance. The Information Literacy Librarian will participate in developing goals and objectives for integrated virtual and in-person programs that teach research skills, promote information literacy, and enhance the student experience at ASU. The librarian will provide outreach to students and to faculty in assigned departments.

Responsibilities
The successful candidate will:
• Possess a strong public service orientation and excitement about teaching and learning,
• Contribute to the development and integration of information literacy skills and concepts into the University curriculum,
• Provide course-integrated information literacy instruction both on and off campus,

Position Title:

Instructor or Associate Professor (Scholarly Communications)

The University Library at Appalachian State University seeks a creative and proactive individual for a newly defined position of Scholarly Communications and Intellectual Property Librarian. The position is responsible for uniting and strengthening the Library’s efforts in scholarly communications and intellectual property. The successful candidate will lead scholarly communication outreach efforts to the campus community; will develop and provide intellectual property and copyright services for the campus; and will develop and administer policies and procedures related to the ASU Institutional Repository and Faculty Publications Database. This position demands leadership abilities and the ability to work with library and university constituencies.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Lead a working group in developing and promoting outreach efforts about such issues as authors’ rights, copyright, open access, and the value of depositing scholarship in the ASU Institutional Repository; monitor and share expertise on current developments in scholarly communications, open access, and institutional repositories; serve as the official ASU Library representative for these areas; and provide reference consultations and instruction, including off campus.

Develop and provide information to faculty, staff, and students about copyright, intellectual property, and fair use; develop and oversee a copyright permissions service for the university community that negotiates and subsidizes the use of copyrighted material for educational and research purposes; ensure intellectual property compliance within all library services including reserves, digital collections, electronic resources, and use of the Library’s electronic classrooms; and work with General Counsel, the Graduate School, and other groups to develop comprehensive intellectual property policies, procedures, and support services for use across campus.

Develop policies governing deposit of scholarly materials, procedures and workflow for the institutional repository. Provide usage data and assess the impact, functionality, and effectiveness of the Institutional Repository and Faculty Publications Database. Supervise at least one staff member.

All library faculty are expected to participate in the Library’s information literacy program both on and off campus and to engage in an active program of scholarship, library and professional service as outlined in the University’s Faculty Handbook and the Library’s Departmental Personnel Committee Guidelines. This position will monitor national and international trends and legislation in the areas of responsibilities.

Qualifications

• American Library Association accredited master’s degree.

The new College will maintain a close relationship with the Institute for Health and Human Services. The Founding Dean will be responsible for developing the transition plan of the new College; securing internal and external funding, including the support of research; coordinating the construction of a new academic facility to house the College; and planning for new program/degree offerings.

The successful candidate will have experience in administrative leadership, teaching, research and service in a health-related discipline and a record of achievement that will qualify the candidate for appointment at the rank of professor. The Learning Assistance Program at Appalachian State University invites applications for an Academic Advisor for Student Athletes, a full-time twelve-month position, beginning July 1, 2009. Qualifications for this position include a Master’s Degree (completed or in progress) in Student Development, Counseling, Sports Management or other related fields and experience in college athletics or knowledge of NCAA regulations. Preference will be given to applicants who demonstrate exceptional interpersonal, advocacy, and counseling skills. Responsibilities include assisting the Director and the Associate Director in accomplishing the objectives of the program. Some of the duties include providing academic support services to student athletes of specific sport teams; working with coaches and students on various aspects of academic success which may include referring students to services such as tutoring, study skills consultants, and study skills classes; facilitating orientation for all new student athletes; assisting with the implementation of the athletic study hall program; assisting coaches in providing academic information to prospective students and their parents during on-campus recruiting; providing career and personal counseling or referring students to other campus resources when appropriate; ensuring that athletes have a graduation plan in the appropriate Dean’s offices; communicating NCAA and Appalachian eligibility standards to students from entry through graduation; and creating and maintaining good working relationships with faculty and academic areas. Some evening and weekend hours are required. The academic advisor will report to the Director of Academic Services for Athletes; however, the position is funded through Athletics.

Academic Services for Athletes is a component of the Learning Assistance Program at Appalachian. This unit of the LAP works with student athletes from initial interest through graduation. Appalachian has approximately 500 athletes on 20 teams.

Appalachian State University invites applications for the position of Assistant Director for Organizational Leadership. Appalachian is a member institution of The University of North Carolina System and has an enrollment of over 15,000 students situated in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Boone, North Carolina.

The Assistant Director will report to the Director of the Lee H. McCaskey Center for Student Involvement and Leadership. The Assistant Director has primary responsibility for the development of effective student organizations and for leadership development within the fraternity and sorority system. Further, the Assistant Director is responsible for a variety of leadership development programs and is one of the primary leadership educators on the staff of the Center. The position provides direct advisement and support for recognized fraternities and sororities who are members of the Interfraternity Council and National Pan-Hellenic Council, as well as the councils themselves and general oversight of all aspects of Greek Life including the Panhellenic Council and its members.

The Assistant Director supervises the Coordinator for Sorority Life and Living which is a shared position with the Department of Housing and Residence Life. In addition, this position supervises a graduate assistant in the department. This position has responsibility for leadership development within the Greek and the larger Appalachian community as well as the opportunity to teach both credit and non-credit leadership courses.

The Assistant Director must have a minimum of a master’s degree in College Student Development, Counseling, Higher Education or an appropriate related field with 2 years post graduate experience working in Greek Life, leadership development, student services or general administration. Preferred qualifications consist of 3-5 years of professional experience in higher education or a related field. The position requires excellent oral and written communication skills, ability to interact with a diverse population of students, and the ability to work in a team atmosphere.
