Position Title:

Director, Appalachian Wine Initiative

Appalachian State University (ASU) seeks applications for a full-time, twelve-month, faculty position in Viticulture and Enology (VandE) to begin in July, 2009. The appointment is renewable subject to satisfactory performance evaluations. The successful candidate will interact closely with the new Environmental Science Program, Appalachian’s Research Institute for Energy, Environment, and Economics, and will report directly to the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at ASU. Appalachian State University is one of the fastest growing schools in the 16-school University of North Carolina system. With an enrollment of more than 16,000 students and located in Boone, North Carolina, the University sits in the scenic Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina and is an hour away from the Yadkin Valley wineries in North Carolina’s first dedicated viticulture area. With access to local ski resorts and other numerous outdoor activities, Boone is one of the premier tourism and outdoor recreation destinations in the southeastern U.S.

Applicants for the VandE position should have a M.S. or Ph.D. in Enology, Viticulture, or a relevant area of agricultural science with actual winemaking and field research experience preferred. ASU’s academic VandE degree is pending approval and the successful applicant will be expected to contribute strongly to the design and implementation of that curriculum at the University. This position will initially be considered as non-tenure track, although the potential for a tenure-track appointment exists for highly qualified candidates who possess the Ph.D. The successful applicant should have research interests in the area of “Steep-Slope” Viticulture and will have flexibility in proposing new education and outreach programs to help ASU become a wine-education destination for students and the public interested in the wine industry and mountain viticulture. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in environmental aspects of mountain wine growing, including sustainable production, soil erosion control, and agrochemical mitigation. ASU is also home of the Appalachian Center for Mountain Winegrowing that helps develop and support the growth of high-altitude vineyards and wineries in the Blue Ridge Mountains of the Appalachian range. This Center is expected to help develop a new cooperative test winery that will be designed to address sustainable production, research, and education objectives important to the mountain wine community. The successful applicant will also oversee the WISELAB program at ASU. WISELAB, a mobile wine and grape analysis laboratory owned by the University, travels to vineyards and wineries around the state to provide just-in-time service.

The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures at Appalachian State University invites applications for the position of Department Chair beginning July 1, 2010.

The successful candidate will hold the rank of Full or Associate Professor, and must have at least three years experience as chair of a comparable foreign language department. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in one of the specialties of the Department, and have native or near-native proficiency in the target language and in English. Substantial experience working with units outside the department, and a record of success in implementing a vision of the importance of foreign language learning preferred. Within the department, the ideal candidate will be an excellent teacher/scholar committed to forging productive relationships with faculty and students from diverse languages and cultures. The position requires effective interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills, and a commitment to impartiality, openness, and collaboration. Success with external funding preferred. Chairs customarily teach one course per semester and maintain an active program of scholarly research.

The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures has 16 full-time faculty and 14 adjunct instructors. The department houses 9 languages and offers an M.A., 4 undergraduate majors, and 5 undergraduate minors. The department has approximately 16 graduate students, 60 majors and over 100 minors.

The teaching load is 3 courses per semester for faculty with an active research agenda. The Department of Mathematical Sciences at Appalachian State University invites applications for a tenure-track nine-month faculty position in Mathematics Education beginning August 2010. A doctorate is required; a doctorate in mathematics education is preferred, but consideration will be given to applicants with a doctorate in statistics education or mathematical sciences with appropriate experiences in education. The duties of this position include teaching mathematics or statistics courses and content courses for pre-service and in-service teachers of various grade levels, establishing and maintaining an active program of scholarship and participating in service activities. Additional duties may include: conducting workshops for teachers, applying for and implementing funded projects, observing student teachers, student advisement, curriculum development, and possible on-line instruction and/or instruction at off-campus sites. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Physics, Astronomy, or a related field, and must be eligible for tenure at the rank of Associate or Full Professor.

Applicants must provide evidence of excellence in undergraduate and graduate instruction, research, and outreach, with preference for those with administrative experience. The successful candidate will possess outstanding communication, interpersonal, and mentoring skills in support of faculty, staff, and student development. While providing leadership toward meeting or exceeding departmental and institutional goals, including interdisciplinary teaching and research, the Chairperson will enhance existing levels of external funding, and will develop foundational support, academic collaborations and corporate partnerships. Department Chairpersons normally teach one class per semester and maintain an active research program.

The department offers B.S. degrees in Applied Physics and Secondary Education - Physics, a B.A. in Physics, an M.S. in Engineering Physics, and a Professional Science Master’s concentration in Instrumentation and Automation. Facilities include, but are not limited to: the Dark Sky Observatory; the state-of-the-art Rankin Astronomy Instructional Facility; a new nanoscience and advanced materials laboratory including extensive electron, ion and scanned probe microscopy facilities; an electrostatics laboratory; an ion trapping laboratory; optoelectronic and spectroscopy research facilities; instrumentation and automation research and instruction labs; and a well-established teaching and demonstration infrastructure. . Examples of faculty research areas include: eclipsing binaries, asteroid research, stellar spectroscopy, exoplanets, atmospheric and environmental physics, archeophysics, biophysics, early universe physics, physics education research, nanoscience, and advanced materials research. The department houses a complete machine shop and electronics shop. In addition, the department hosts the editorial offices of The Physics Teacher magazine. The department has 14 tenure-track faculty members, six part-time faculty, four staff, approximately 75 undergraduate majors, and 20 master’s students.

The Department of Psychology at Appalachian State University invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of assistant professor beginning in August, 2010 in the area of Community Psychology. Successful applicants will be expected to provide instruction and mentoring at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and will have an opportunity to participate in the Department’s internship program. THE DEPARTMENT The Department of Technology currently offers seven undergraduate and two graduate degree programs for over 900 majors and is one of the largest and fastest-growing departments on Appalachian’s campus, in part due to our emphasis on hands-on, experiential learning. This newly created position is part of the Bibliographic Services team of 16 members (6 faculty, 7 specialists, 3 technicians) which acquires, catalogs, and processes library resources in all formats.

The successful candidate will work closely with the Bibliographic Services Team members and other library colleagues to create a comprehensive approach to the management of electronic resources. Lead a working group in developing and promoting outreach efforts about such issues as authors’ rights, copyright, open access, and the value of depositing scholarship in the ASU Institutional Repository; monitor and share expertise on current developments in scholarly communications, open access, and institutional repositories; serve as the official ASU Library representative for these areas; and provide reference consultations and instruction, including off campus.

Develop and provide information to faculty, staff, and students about copyright, intellectual property, and fair use; develop and oversee a copyright permissions service for the university community that negotiates and subsidizes the use of copyrighted material for educational and research purposes; ensure intellectual property compliance within all library services including reserves, digital collections, electronic resources, and use of the Library’s electronic classrooms; and work with General Counsel, the Graduate School, and other groups to develop comprehensive intellectual property policies, procedures, and support services for use across campus.

Develop policies governing deposit of scholarly materials, procedures and workflow for the institutional repository. Provide usage data and assess the impact, functionality, and effectiveness of the Institutional Repository and Faculty Publications Database. Supervise at least one staff member.

This is a twelve month, full-time position. Specific job responsibilities include: Data analysis, identification of technological efficiencies, and provide software specifications to meet recruitment and enrollment goals in the Office of Admissions and for the Appalachian State University Strategic Plan. The Senior Associate Director for Technology works at a highly functional level to develop and implement strategies that enhance recruitment and enrollment processes, while supporting all initiatives assigned by the Director of Admissions and the Associate Vice Chancellor for Enrollment Management. The Senior Associate Director is a member of the Admissions leadership team and directly supervises the Admissions Communications Coordinator. Other supervisory duties may be expected as well. The position works a variable schedule at times, as travel may be required.

Duties include: Assisting with defining and enhancing business practices for the various areas in Admissions; collaborating with University Communications in developing new projects; preparing all policy and documentation, instructions, and training procedures for all new and current employees regarding new and existing systems; writing functional and technical specifications; coordinating and consulting with other systems analysts and agencies in a partnership to design and develop new technologies and systems; creating and implementing plans to test new technologies during development and quality assurance testing; developing and managing statistical reporting mechanisms and assessment measures.

Appalachian State University seeks an experienced internal administrative professional to provide leadership, advocacy, and coordination for the academic initiatives and support services of the Learning Assistance Program. The Executive Director of the LAP will provide direct classroom instruction and advising as appropriate. The Executive Director will also serve as the Project Advisor for the SSS grant and therefore his/her advising caseload will include SSS students. Other priorities and special projects are set in consultation with the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education and are directly related to improvement of retention and enhancement of student success. Availability to work some evenings and minimal travel may be required.

Qualifications: Terminal or master’s degree in student personnel, higher education, or related field from an accredited college or university. A minimum of seven years experience in academic support services or related areas. Evidence of progressively responsible administrative experience including supervision and budget management. Outstanding writing skills (ability to construct successful grant proposals), oral communication skills, computer skills, strong interpersonal skills and a willingness to work closely with other units on campus. a. Maintain liaison with the United States Department of Education, University, target schools, and communities

6. Evaluation/Strategic Planning/Assessment
a. Conduct formative evaluation and summative evaluation to guide program improvement
b. Analyze the program’s effectiveness by routinely measuring and reporting on specific aspects and/or the overall comprehensive program via the required assessment tools
c. Continually explore opportunities to create bridges between the Upward Bound program, the Upward Bound Math Science Center and the University strategic plan

EDUCATION:
Masters Degree in Education Administration, Counseling, Education, Student Services or related field.

EXPERIENCE:
Minimum of three to five years of program administration with TRIO or similar grant-funded program; demonstrated success managing grant-funded projects; experience with budgets and fiscal management; supervisory experience

Appalachian State University seeks two creative and enthusiastic team members to serve as the Academic Coordinator for the classic Upward Bound program and the Academic Coordinator for the Math/Science Upward Bound program. Upward Bound is funded by the United States Department of Education and seeks to increase the college-going rate of qualified and selected low-income secondary school students. Upward Bound is an intensive year-long academic readiness program that provides tutoring and academic support throughout the academic year and a 6-week educational enrichment residential program during the summer. These are twelve-month, full-time positions, with an anticipated start date of November 16, 2009.

SPECIFIC JOB DUTIES:
• Develop, coordinate, and implement academic training and programs that enhance preparation for post-secondary education during the academic year and summer for students in the program.
• Develop, implement, and provide oversight for academic year and summer academic enrichment activities on and off Appalachian’s campus for high school students and families in the Upward Bound program
• Monitor students’ academic performance regularly, and make recommendations regarding additional services needed based upon these reports.
• Recruit, hire, train, and supervise students’ tutors and summer leaders.
• Serve as a mentor and positive role model to Upward Bound students.
• Assist in data collection and database maintenance for Annual Performance Report.
• Collaborate and coordinate services with other pre-college programs on the Appalachian campus.
• Serve on approved (by the UB director) educational advisory boards.
• Assist with writing grants for continued funding of services.
• Other duties as assigned by the Director.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Master's degree in a counseling, education, or a related field OR Bachelor’s degree and at least three years teaching or counseling adolescents. The successful candidate is flexible, adaptable, committed, and energetic. Strong public relations skills, demonstrated proficiency in written and oral communication, computer competency and outstanding organizational skills are a must. The ability to establish rapport with adults and adolescents and serve as a positive role model is essential. Ability to administer program services that require evening, overnight and/or weekend hours, and travel to the target counties. Applications from persons with personal experience in overcoming academic or economic obstacles to success are encouraged.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Degree in Math/Science preferred for the Academic Coordinator of the Math/Science Center. Experience working with and in public schools is important. Knowledge of post-secondary education requirements and financial aid is desirable.

The Appalachian State University’s Women’s Studies Program seeks applications for the position of Director, which is a full-time, nine-month faculty appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor, beginning August 2010.

The position requires a visionary administrator and scholar with an active research agenda in women’s and gender studies and experience directing an interdisciplinary degree program. A doctoral degree is required, but the area of specialization is open. The Director’s teaching load is one course per semester. The Director serves full-time in the Women’s Studies Program and is eligible for tenure in the appropriate academic department on campus.

The Women’s Studies Program at Appalachian State has two full-time faculty members assigned to the program, including the Director. The Director of Women’s Studies serves a renewable five-year term, and, after completing service as Director, remains with the Women’s Studies Program as a full-time faculty member. The Women’s Studies Program also includes 75 affiliated faculty members from 18 campus departments who serve the program by teaching women’s and gender studies courses in their disciplines.

Founded in 1976, the Women’s Studies Program at Appalachian State is the oldest in the University of North Carolina system. Our interdisciplinary, university-wide program offers a B.A., a minor, and a Graduate Certificate and is housed in the newly created University College, along with interdisciplinary degree programs in Appalachian Studies, Global Studies, Interdisciplinary Studies, and Sustainable Development.
