The A.R. Smith Department of Chemistry at Appalachian State University invites applications for a tenure-track nine-month faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning August 2009. We seek a candidate who will excel in teaching and conduct a vigorous research program at the undergraduate level.
Qualifications for this position include: a Ph.D. in Chemistry or in an allied discipline, with a minimum of 18 graduate credit hours in chemistry, and research experience in the areas of Energy or the Environment; post-doctoral experience is desired. Candidates are expected to provide instruction in introductory and advanced levels of chemistry in the candidate’s field. Instructional duties will include student advisement and curriculum development. The successful applicant will be expected to initiate and sustain an externally funded undergraduate research program and will have research interests which complement those in the department. Participation in service activities is also expected.

The A.R. Smith Department of Chemistry at Appalachian State University invites applications for a stock room and laboratory manager position.
Position description:
The stockroom and laboratory manager will supervise the daily operation of the chemical stockroom. Duties will include procurement of materials, inventory tracking, and preparation of samples, reagents and solutions in support of the chemistry department’s teaching laboratories. This person will also be responsible for training and supervision of student workers who will assist in operation of the stockroom. In this position the manager will be subject to the inherent hazards of working with numerous chemicals on a daily basis and moderate lifting (up to 50 pounds) on a limited basis. In addition to the above mentioned responsibilities, the successful candidate may have a small teaching load. This is a 12 month position; the duties will commence immediately (if feasible) or by January 1, 2009. The stockroom and laboratory manager reports to the chair of the chemistry department.
Qualifications for this position include: a Master’s degree in chemistry or a Bachelor’s degree in chemistry with a minimum of 18 graduate credit hours in chemistry, a minimum of 1 year experience as an academic laboratory manager or assistant lab manager preparing reagents and operating an instructional chemistry lab support facility. Training in laboratory safety (OSHA) and waste management regulations (EPA) is desired. The successful candidate must have excellent managerial, organizational and communication (written and oral) skills; should have advanced skills using Microsoft Office applications including databases; should be able to enforce safety procedures and work with a diverse group of faculty and students. The successful candidate will work closely with the departmental Chemical Safety Officer to ensure the safe operation of the stockroom. The A.R. The Department of Foreign Languages & Literatures at Appalachian State University invites applications for the position of Department Chair beginning July 1, 2008.
Candidates at the rank of Associate or Full Professor who meet or exceed the department’s requirements for appointment at the rank of Full Professor will be considered. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Spanish or French, specialization open, and have native or near-native proficiency in the target language and in English. The successful candidate will have documented strengths in departmental leadership and a record of success in implementing a vision of the importance of foreign language learning. The new chair will lead the department in playing a vital role in the university's broader goal to internationalize. Within the department, the ideal candidate will be an excellent teacher/scholar committed to forging productive relationships with faculty and students from diverse languages and cultures. The position requires effective interpersonal and communication skills, and a commitment to impartiality, openness, and collaboration. Substantial administrative experience with complex budgets required; success with external funding preferred. Chairs at ASU customarily teach one course per semester and maintain an active program of scholarly research.
The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures has 16 full-time faculty and 14 adjunct instructors. The department houses 8 languages and offers an M.A., 4 undergraduate majors, and 5 undergraduate minors. The department has approximately 16 graduate students, 60 majors and over 100 minors.

The Department of Geography and Planning seeks a geographer or planner to serve as a GIScience lab supervisor. Duties will include: supervising departmental computer labs (system administration, network administration, SDE database development and maintenance), teaching one course per semester, collaborating with faculty and students on research and service projects, and supervising student lab workers. The position requires experience with ArcGIS and MS system/network administration; experience with ArcSDE and relational database development with Oracle is preferred. Starting salary between $35,000 and $40,000 for an 11 or 12-month contract.

The successful candidate will teach graduate courses in policy analysis and program evaluation, an elective at the graduate level, and undergraduate courses in public administration, state and local government, and public policy. The course load for this position is 3-3. Successful applicants will be expected to provide instruction and mentoring at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Candidates who are Board Certified Behavior Analysts (or eligible for certification) and who have experience in autism or other developmental disabilities are particularly encouraged to apply, given the emerging clinical, research, and outreach opportunities in the area of autism-spectrum disorders at the ASU Institute for Health and Human Services. Duties and Responsibilities:
- Coordinate the production of instructional technology projects and materials
- Develop and conduct face-to-face and online faculty workshops in TLT (Teaching and Learning with Technology)

Required Qualifications:
- Earned Master’s degree in Instructional Technology, Educational Media, Instructional Systems Design, Educational Psychology, or related field
- Experience designing and producing course and program websites, web graphics, web resources, and other digital course materials
- Experience in project management, including managing time, establishing priorities, distributing responsibilities, and meeting milestones and deliverables
- Knowledge of and experience in using learning management systems (e.g.,, Moodle, WebCT, Elluminate) for instruction
- Expertise in web authoring applications such as Dreamweaver, and Internet programming languages such as HTML
- Professional preparation in using an array of instructional technologies including hardware and software, multimedia technologies, the Internet, and distributed/distance learning techniques
- Knowledge of emerging technologies as related to teaching and learning
