The A.R. Smith Department of Chemistry at Appalachian State University invites applications for a tenure-track nine-month faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning August 2010. We seek a candidate who will excel in teaching and conduct a vigorous research program at the undergraduate level.
Qualifications for this position include: a Ph.D. in Chemistry or Environmental Science, a minimum of 18 graduate credit hours in chemistry, and research experience in the area of Geochemistry. Post-doctoral experience is desired. Candidates are expected to provide instruction in introductory and advanced levels of chemistry in the candidate’s field and to contribute to the Environmental Science Program. Instructional duties will include student advisement and curriculum development. The successful applicant will be expected to initiate and sustain an externally funded undergraduate research program and will have research interests which complement those in the department. Participation in service activities is also expected.

The course load for this position is 3-3. The department seeks a scholar in environmental policy who can support courses in both our political science and public administration programs. This position will support our new Master of Arts curriculum in Environmental Politics and Policy.

The Department of Mathematical Sciences at Appalachian State University invites applications for two non-tenure-track nine-month lecturer positions beginning August 2010. A masters degree in some area of Mathematical Sciences is required, applicants with PhD's are welcome. The duties of this position include teaching 12 hours per semester, the majority at the freshman level. Evidence of effective teaching and a commitment to undergraduate education are essential for this position. The positions may be renewable depending on funding.
The Department of Mathematical Sciences consists of 26 tenured or tenure track faculty as well as more than 15 full and part-time non-tenure track faculty. The department offers degrees in Actuarial Sciences; Statistics; Mathematics, Secondary Education; and Mathematics with concentrations in Business, Computation, Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, and Statistics. In addition majors in Mathematics have the option of designing their own concentrations. The department also has two graduate programs, one leading to an MA in Mathematics Secondary Education and the other leading to an MA in Mathematics, College Teaching. The program services more than 100 students in pursuing an MLS in school and/or public librarianship. This newly created position is part of the Bibliographic Services team of 16 members (6 faculty, 7 specialists, 3 technicians) which acquires, catalogs, and processes library resources in all formats.
The successful candidate will work closely with the Bibliographic Services Team members and other library colleagues to create a comprehensive approach to the management of electronic resources. Our goal is to provide a seamless and transparent digital research environment for students and faculty. This position demands leadership abilities and the ability to initiate and complete projects in a timely and independent manner. It also requires collaborative work with several teams to oversee the Library’s electronic resources.
All library faculty are expected to participate in the Library’s information literacy program both on and off campus and to engage in an active program of scholarship, library and professional service as outlined in the University’s Faculty Handbook and the Library’s Departmental Personnel Committee Guidelines. The E-Resources Librarian will monitor and explore developments, trends, and standards within areas of responsibility.
Responsibilities
The successful candidate will:
• Evaluate and improve access to e-resources on- and off-campus: troubleshoot access, maintenance, and other performance issues related to electronic resources. Serve as lead for the management of access to e-resources.
• Design effective workflows for managing the library’s e-resources using a shared ILS (III Millennium), e-journal portal (EBSCO A-to-Z) and link resolver (WebBridge).
• Analyze and continually improve access to library resources in the link resolver.
• Lead continual review of competing products and new methods of managing e-resources.
• Work directly with vendors on projects related to access to e-resources.
• Ensure that new database, software features and upgrades are communicated with colleagues.

Responsibilities:
The University Archivist is responsible for the overall arrangement, description, preservation, and reference of records documenting the University’s history, organization, policies, and activities. The position provides leadership and outreach to campus by identifying, describing, and establishing retention periods for all University records; provides information to offices/departments about transfer procedures and records management best practices; promotes awareness and usage of the 2007 UNC System General Schedule (http://its.uncg.edu/Records_Management/UNCGenSch14062007.pdf); oversees the function of the University Records Center and supervises its personnel, and identifies records of lasting historical or administrative value for inclusion in the University Archives.
Qualifications:
Required:
• M.A. in archival administration, public history, or related field; or ALA-accredited master’s degree

• At least five years of experience in archival administration or records management, preferably in higher education
• Familiarity with archival and records management best practices as well as current legislation, laws, and policy which affect university records
• Familiarity with Encoded Archival Description (EAD) and other archival metadata schemes

The Appalachian State University’s Women’s Studies Program seeks applications for the position of Director, which is a full-time, nine-month faculty appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor, beginning August 2010.
The position requires a visionary administrator and scholar with an active research agenda in women’s and gender studies and experience directing an interdisciplinary degree program. A doctoral degree is required, but the area of specialization is open. The Director’s teaching load is one course per semester. The Director serves full-time in the Women’s Studies Program and is eligible for tenure in the appropriate academic department on campus.
The Women’s Studies Program at Appalachian State has two full-time faculty members assigned to the program, including the Director. The Director of Women’s Studies serves a renewable five-year term, and, after completing service as Director, remains with the Women’s Studies Program as a full-time faculty member. Responsibilities include: Provides supervision and support to the staff of the Academic Services for Athletes (ASA). This includes direct supervision (hiring/dismissal, training, annual evaluation, salary and promotion recommendations) of staff, both EPA and SPA staff. The Director coordinates NCAA annual reports such as Academic Progress Report and the Graduation Success Rate. The Director works closely with the Office of Institutional Research in reporting data for the Federal Graduation Rate and other reports as requested by UNC General Administration. The Director provides academic advising and career advising for Appalachian student athletes and serves as an advocate for ASA and for students. The Director Is responsible for promoting the services provided for students and the successes of student athletes. The Director meets with recruits and their families, as requested by coaches. The Director maintains communication of University policies and procedures to ASA staff, athletic staff, and students.
This person is expected to keep current on curricular changes that affect advising services to student athletes and admission standards, as well as, NCAA eligibility rules and information as it relates to the eligibility of current and future student athletes. The Director leads regular staff meetings and planning/retreat sessions for ASA and coordinates the ASA portion of the Learning Assistance Program annual report. The Director serves on various university committees within University College and Athletics. The Director ensures that comprehensive orientation programs are provided to student athletes and is responsible for budget development.
The Director works closely with the Executive Director of the Learning Assistance Program to develop a comprehensive plan for retention, assessment, and academic success of students. The Director communicates with various constituencies across campus including faculty, administrators, Sports Information, and Athletics. This position reports directly to the Executive Director of the Learning Assistance Program but works in close concert with the Athletic Administration to provide suggestions and policies which affect the well‐being of the student‐athlete.
Candidates should have excellent written and oral communication skills. Strong interpersonal skills and a desire to work with college students is a must. They also should have strong analytical and organizational skills, and be able to work effectively with diverse groups and individuals.
