The Department of Foreign Languages & Literatures at Appalachian State University invites applications for the position of Department Chair beginning July 1, 2008.
Candidates at the rank of Associate or Full Professor who meet or exceed the department’s requirements for appointment at the rank of Full Professor will be considered. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Spanish or French, specialization open, and have native or near-native proficiency in the target language and in English. The successful candidate will have documented strengths in departmental leadership and a record of success in implementing a vision of the importance of foreign language learning. The new chair will lead the department in playing a vital role in the university's broader goal to internationalize. Within the department, the ideal candidate will be an excellent teacher/scholar committed to forging productive relationships with faculty and students from diverse languages and cultures. The position requires effective interpersonal and communication skills, and a commitment to impartiality, openness, and collaboration. Substantial administrative experience with complex budgets required; success with external funding preferred. Chairs at ASU customarily teach one course per semester and maintain an active program of scholarly research.
The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures has 16 full-time faculty and 14 adjunct instructors. The department houses 8 languages and offers an M.A., 4 undergraduate majors, and 5 undergraduate minors. The department has approximately 16 graduate students, 60 majors and over 100 minors.

The A.R. Smith Department of Chemistry at Appalachian State University invites applications for a faculty position at the rank of Lecturer, for the 2008-2009 academic year beginning August 15, 2008.
Qualifications for this position include: a Ph.D. in Chemistry and teaching experience in general chemistry courses. The successful candidate will teach 12 contact hours and is expected to provide instruction in the introductory level chemistry program (teach a lecture of General Chemistry and the corresponding laboratories) and possibly teach in other areas depending upon the training and background of the applicant. He/she will hold office hours for students; perform grading and other duties associated with teaching but no committee work.

The Department of Geography and Planning seeks a geographer or planner to serve as a GIScience lab supervisor. Duties will include: supervising departmental computer labs (system administration, network administration, SDE database development and maintenance), teaching one course per semester, collaborating with faculty and students on research and service projects, and supervising student lab workers. The position requires experience with ArcGIS and MS system/network administration; experience with ArcSDE and relational database development with Oracle is preferred. A master’s degree in geography, planning, or related field is required (the candidate must have a minimum of 18 graduate credits in geography or planning). Starting salary between $35,000 and $40,000 for an 11 or 12-month contract.

This is a full-time, 12-month, non-tenure-track appointment for which the preferred start date is July 1, 2008. Candidates should have an advanced degree (Master’s or Ph.D.) in physics or a closely related field by the time of the appointment and a demonstrated interest and ability in teaching, undergraduate laboratory development, and grant proposal writing for teaching and laboratory instruction. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the educational mission of the department by teaching laboratories in our introductory undergraduate courses and contributing to the continued innovation and development of these courses. The normal teaching load will be six contact hours per week during the academic year. The remainder of the successful candidate’s time will be devoted to laboratory and demonstration management activities; working closely with the Physics Department faculty to develop and enhance our instructional labs; supervising student work in the laboratory; and overseeing and training student teaching assistants. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Director of Research & Evaluation has principal responsibility for the development and implementation of recurrent program evaluation methodologies for use by constituent programs of the agency and for the oversight, design, and conduct of agency research projects intended for publication or other dissemination. In this capacity, the DRE is responsible to:
- Seek and obtain external funding to support the conduct of research studies aimed at specific interests of the agency and oversee the conception, implementation, analysis and preparation of such research for publication; and, additionally, seek the collaborative involvement of ASU faculty in such research projects when those research projects present opportunities of mutual interest.
- Actively encourage such research projects among the constituent programs of the agency, particularly in the area of client outcomes, and oversee and assist those programs in all aspects of the conduct of such outcome research.
- Assume primary responsibility for carrying the aforementioned research through to publication in professional journals, and pursue other forms of dissemination such as conference presentations and contributions to association newsletters.
- Serve as Program Coordinator for AFI’s Teaching-Parent master’s degree program through ASU and serve as the professor of record for various courses in that program, as required.
- Supervise the staff of the Research and Evaluation (R&E) Division and oversee their conduct of recurrent professional staff and consumer evaluations of practitioners in TFM group homes.
- Consult and assist, with the help of the R&E staff, in the development of methodologies and processes for recurrent practitioner evaluations and consumer evaluations for each of the agency’s other constituent service programs.
- Provide occasional, non-research related guidance and expertise, as required, to forward the overall goals of the agency, its constituent programs, and the director of development.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Earned Ph.D. or other doctorate in the behavioral sciences or evidence of imminent accomplishment of same.
- Demonstrated research and/or evaluation experience in nonprofit, university, human service and/or government sector positions
- Must qualify for either full or associate membership on the Graduate Faculty. Full membership requires the terminal degree (preferably in the behavioral sciences, e.g., psychology, sociology, social work) and “sustained evidence” of teaching excellence and scholarly accomplishment. Associate membership requires the terminal degree (or “ABD”) and “... evidence of commitment to graduate teaching, research, and the goals of graduate study at ASU.” Determination of graduate faculty status is the province of ASU.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Direct involvement in federally or state funded outcome studies.
- Understanding of and specific experience with behaviorally-based approaches to working with children and families

Appalachian State University’s Office of Admissions is seeking qualified candidates for two positions of Assistant Director. Responsibilities include: developing and implementing recruitment and enrollment strategies to meet diverse enrollment goals for a selective mid-sized public university; coordinating administrative activities for pre-applicant and post-applicant development and follow-up; representing the University’s programs and policies to prospective students, parents, and school counselors; and assisting in the review of applicants for admission. Candidates should have excellent written and oral communication skills. They also should have strong organizational skills and be able to effectively work interdepartmentally.
