Career Banding
The State of North Carolina has adopted a new competency based classification and compensation system called Career Banding. It permits thousands of narrowly defined classifications to be condensed into a smaller number of Job Families. There are pay ranges for each of the new job families which will be based on the average market rate of pay for the specific occupation. All SPA positions must be banded no later than May 1, 2008.
The key component to the Career Banding system includes classifying, evaluating, planning career development, and paying employees based on the attainment and demonstration of established competencies. Career Banding establishes specific competencies; knowledge, skills, and abilities for each new classification.
