Policy and Procedures for Tuition Waiver
The University provides a Tuition Waiver program for eligible University employees to take tuition free classes per fiscal year (July 1 - June 30). Which includes fall, spring and summer sessions. Normally, not more than one course per term may be approved.
Teachers who have supervised an ASU student teacher who wish to participate in the tuition waiver program must obtain the necessary forms and approval from the Reich College of Education Office located in Edwin Duncan Hall.
Customer Service
Description: Learn how to identify, manage and
retain your customers. This class introduces
the concept of “all work as a process” and
how quality customer service saves time, money
and effort, and makes the work day more enjoyable
for everyone.
Audience: Anyone
Minimum number of Participants: 15

Dealing with Change
Description: Based on the best selling book, Who
Moved My Cheese? by Spencer Johnson, this
class helps participants identify common reactions
to change, understand why people react to change
differently, and provides effective strategies
for dealing with change.

Giving and Receiving Feedback
Description: This class shares the art and science
of giving and receiving feedback. Participants
will learn how to share positive feedback as well
as opportunities for improvement with tact and
empathy. Additionally, participants will
learn how to invite and accept feedback from others.
Audience: Anyone

Getting Employees Back on Track
Description: This class helps participants understand
the elements of sound practice regarding the State
discipline process to help employees get back on
track. Participants will learn how to build
an effective case and manage all employees consistently
and fairly.
Audience: Managers
Prerequisite: Complete online training module prior
to class

Leadership Development Series (LDS)
Description:
The Leadership Development Series (LDS) is a
twelve (12) month professional development program
for up to twenty-five (25) middle-level managers
at Appalachian State University. It leverages Appalachian’s
recently purchased Enterprise Wide License (EWL)
- a partnership between North Carolina and a well-respected
training company named Development Dimensions International
(DDI) that includes access to twenty-three (23)
web-based leadership training courses and OPAL – a
just-in-time online leadership resource center
that includes 215 topics and 311 printable learning
tools for handling tough work situations.
Audience: Participants
are nominated by their Vice Chancellor. This
class is designed for middle-management such as
Assistant Directors, Directors, Department Heads,
etc.

Supervisor Development Series (SDS)
Description:
The SDS is designed to equip supervisors with the
foundational and technical knowledge needed to
supervise others. Participants will learn
their roles and responsibilities as supervisors
throughout the employment cycle – from creating
a new position to preparing for retirement.
Audience: Participants
are nominated by their Vice Chancellor. This
class is designed for new Supervisors, Potential
Supervisors, or Supervisors of employees with no
direct-reports.
Prerequisite: Some online training
Date & Time: Spring Semester, 2008
Teambuilding with Myers-Briggs Type Indicator
Description: The MBTI is an internationally respected
tool for identifying a person’s preferences
for becoming motivated, processing information,
making decisions and managing their world. Participants
will learn to respect their differences and maximize
team strengths.
Audience: Any in-tact team
Prerequisite: Complete and submit the MBTI questionnaire
Minimum number of Participants: 15
